Ellen’s is booming, with restaurants opening in Frisco, Fort Worth, East Dallas and in the former Crossroads Diner

Ellen’s comfort food restaurant will be expanded significantly in 2021. What started as a tiny restaurant in the West End in 2012 has grown into a larger West End restaurant, a new place in Allen, and four more soon to be found Ellen’s restaurants in Dallas. Fort Worth.

“Our real opportunity began during COVID,” says Ellen’s partner Joe Groves. “So many places didn’t make it. And we looked at many potential restaurant locations with landlords craving for activity. “

It’s unclear which restaurants will open in what order as Groves and partners Russell Mertz and Andrew Chooljian are working with multiple communities to get permits. Here is the list of upcoming Ellen’s restaurants expected to open in 2021:

  • Far North Dallas: The former Crossroads Diner – a popular breakfast spot in Dallas – is reopening as Ellen’s. Crossroads “already had breakfast afterwards,” so “was a perfect fit,” says Groves.
  • East Dallas: Snooze, an AM restaurant that never opened at Casa Linda, and Ellen’s will be moving into the open space on N. Buckner Boulevard on Garland Road.
  • Frisco: The opening of an ellen near Legacy Road and State Highway 121 has been delayed but is now underway, Groves says.
  • Fort Worth: Ellen’s will move to the Near Southside neighborhood of Fort Worth, which is south of downtown. The growing neighborhood is home to breweries like HopFusion Ale Works, as well as dozens of restaurants.

Ellen’s is best known for its southern food, as are the top two sellers, pancake pot pie and chicken-fried steak. Because of the early morning hours of Ellen – it opens at 7 a.m. in the West End and 7 a.m. on the weekend in Allen – it has the identity of a breakfast or brunch place, but according to Groves, Ellen’s expansion gives them the opportunity to experience it to remind customers that they are serving food all day.

“A lot of people think of Ellen as a breakfast place, and we certainly are a breakfast place. But we also have lunch and dinner, as well as happy hour and a full-service bar, ”he says. “If someone wants to have breakfast for dinner, they can have it. If you want to have dinner for breakfast, you can have it. “

Ellen, like so many other restaurants in Texas, struggled through the pandemic and closed their dining rooms for 14 weeks. According to Groves, sales recovered in August 2020 and have remained stable since then. The week of March 15, which likely brought Spring Breakers to the two restaurants, was the biggest week in the company’s history, though they’re still 50% full.

With the support of his partners, Groves feels happy to grow the business during the coronavirus pandemic.

The company is also expanding beyond the Ellen brand. Groves and partners hope to open an Italian restaurant in Frisco, a salon in Dallas, and a cantina in basement. More will follow in these restaurants.

Ellen’s is located at 1790 N. Record St. in the West End of Dallas and 210 S. Central Expressway in Allen. Four more Ellen’s restaurants are expected to open in 2021.
