Fort Worth bars and restaurants can now sell pre-mixed cocktails to-go

Texas Governor Greg Abbott freed the margaritas. The Texas Alcoholic Beverage Commission announced over the weekend that bars and restaurants can now sell pre-mixed cocktails to take away.

From now on, these establishments can sell cocktails, provided their containers are covered with adhesive tape and placed in a plastic bag that is closed with a cable tie. The waiver applies to every bar or restaurant with “permanent food service”. Every cocktail purchase must be accompanied by at least one food that has been prepared on site. Diners who buy a take-away cocktail are not allowed to transport it in the passenger cabin of their vehicles.

Previously, bars and restaurants were allowed to sell cocktail kits containing the liquor in the manufacturer-sealed packaging – not that these restrictions prevented Tex-Mex restaurants nationwide from selling frozen margaritas in sealed plastic jugs. Beer and wine must still be sold in their original packaging.

“Operating during this pandemic has proven to be incredibly challenging for all segments of the alcoholic beverage industry,” said Bentley Nettles, executive director of TABC, in a press release. “Allowing these companies to sell mixed drinks to take away will help ease the burden on many of these difficult businesses.”
