Fort Worth Buddhist Temple Serves As Vaccination Registration Site, Food Distribution Center – NBC 5 Dallas-Fort Worth

As Tarrant County’s residents become vaccinated against COVID-19, registration efforts continue in hard-to-reach communities.

On Wednesday, Huong Dao Temple on E. Rosedale Street served as both a vaccination center and personal registration assistance. Students from the University of North Texas Health Science Center supported the effort.

Vincent Hua was one of the students who went from car to car offering help.

“It feels good to give back because I came from such a community when I was growing up. I was born in Houston, Texas, so it’s good to be able to achieve something like that, ”said Hua. “The people were very welcoming.”

According to Rev. Lam Nguyen, the temple served as a food distribution center every Wednesday during the pandemic. This particular area of the community faces challenges when it comes to registering for the vaccine, Rev. Nguyen said.

“You don’t speak English very well. They don’t use technology like the internet to register and they don’t even know how to call to register, ”said Nguyen. “It’s difficult to tell people about it right now. If we all work together, we can do it. “

More than 842,000 COVID-19 vaccine doses were administered in the county on Wednesday, according to Tarrant County Public Health. 450,240 Tarrant County residents, or 21%, received at least one dose and 265,617, or 12%, are fully vaccinated.

As vaccine supply grows across the state, Tarrant County’s public health director Vinny Taneja said her registration efforts will continue Tuesday.

“Now we’re going to the young people and sending messages to schools to encourage students 16 and over to enroll. We write messages to the parents, ”said Taneja.

Hua said his parents were not far from him when he was helping in the temple on Wednesday.

“It makes me feel good. I feel complete. I feel like I’m giving something back,” he said. “I not only want to make my parents proud, but my community as well, and I feel like I am do that with it. “

The giveaways at Huong Dao Temple are held every Wednesday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
