Plano businessman John Muns was elected the city’s next mayor on Saturday night, defeating city council member Lily Bao and retired professor Lydia Ortega.

The three candidates were up for election to replace the mayor of Plano, Harry LaRosiliere, whose term ends after eight years due to term restrictions.

Lily Bao
Bao is a real estate agent and member of Plano’s City Council for 7th place, which she was elected to in 2019. Bao previously ran for mayor in 2017 and lost to LaRosiliere. According to her campaign website, in addition to her seat on the city council, Bao has held several positions in the community, including on the advisory board of Collin County’s Myers Park & ​​Event Center, the advisory board of the Plano Housing Authority, and the Plano ISD Diversity Advisory Committee. She is also a member of the Plano Chamber of Commerce.

John Muns
Muns is a Plano businessman who has worked in various civil functions, including in the Plano ISD Board of Trustees, in the Planning and Zoning Commission as well as in the YMCA, the Plano Orchestra and in the civil centers. Muns has lived in Plano for 50 years and has approval from five former mayors, according to NBC 5’s media partner The Dallas Morning News.

Lydia Ortega
Ortega is a retired economics professor who came to Plano from California, according to her Campgain website. Promoting her economic background, she says she will work to “make Plano an affordable, suburban community of excellence”.
